Update Failure on Physical Servers Due to SMB Issues
Product versions: 11.2
Last modified: 20 April 2026
Problem
NAKIVO Backup & Replication fails to update on a physical Windows machine with errors such as:
-
SMB Sharing Violation
-
Port 445 (SMB) is closed
Background
The update process for physical machines relies on SMB access and remote execution via administrative privileges.
If required network ports, protocols, or permissions are not properly configured, the system cannot deploy or update components on the target machine.
Common issues include:
-
Blocked SMB port (445)
-
Disabled or unsupported SMB version
-
Missing administrative access
-
PowerShell is not installed or is not accessible
-
Disabled administrative shares
Solution
Before running the update, verify that the physical machine meets the following requirements:
-
Network Accessibility: the machine must be reachable over the network (ping should work)
-
Provide valid administrator credentials with sufficient permissions
-
PowerShell must be installed and available via the default system path.
-
Ensure SMBv2 or higher is enabled
-
Port 445 (SMB) must be open in the firewall and reachable from the Transporter
-
Default shares must be enabled
